My Back Pages/About me

My name is Larry Cafiero, and I am a former newspaper editor, currently a freelance writer, a family man, and a tenor.

Since 2006, I have been a Linux user — not a programmer by anyone’s wildest dreams, but just an end user, which has limited my involvement in distros like the Fedora Project to middle management. I was a Fedora Ambassador for several years, being the point man for the U.S. West Coast for the Fedora booth at various shows like the Southern California Linux Expo, OSCON (when it was in Portland, Oregon), and LinuxFest Northwest.

I served as press officer for the Southern California Linux Expo — the largest volunteer-run Linux event in North America — since SCALE 8x until a few years ago, when I had to cut back on my Linux activities.

About a year ago, Christine Hall, editor of FOSS Force, asked me if I would do a “Distro of the Week” for her online publication, and I agreed. It was a great year but she had to pull the plug on the project. So here we are.

One more thing: I am a huge European football fan, specifically of Celtic in the Scottish League, Liverpool in the EPL, FC St. Pauli in Bundesliga 2, and any other club that has a antifascist undercurrent or better.

I hope you enjoy this column.
